Get The Lowdown On Healthy Non-Stick Cookware
There's a lot of talk these days about the kind of cookware we use at home. Whilst most people appreciate the convenience of non-stick pots and pans, there are some concerns about the materials used to make them.
When Roy J Plunkett accidentally discovered what we now know as Teflon, in 1938, it was a revolution in cookware. Suddenly, you didn't need to use large quantities of oil or fat to stop your food from sticking. And washing-up was much easier, too!
Over the following years, we were introduced to non-stick frying pans, cake tins, baking trays and more, with no need for scrubbing brushes to get them clean.
However, it seems the chemicals used to create the non-stick surface could, in fact, be extremely bad for our health.
Traditional non-stick cookware is made using a chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which we now know is carcinogenic. As the pan heats up, it emits toxic fumes, which have been linked with a range of health issues, including thyroid disease, organ damage and infertility.
In an American study, it was found that regular use of Teflon cookware at high temperatures caused lower birth weights in newborn babies, high cholesterol, liver inflammation, and a weaker immune system.
It is also believed to be bad for our environment and wildlife, due to the high levels of toxicity.
Even though the Cancer Council does not believe Teflon itself causes cancer, there are very valid health reasons for switching to PFOA-free cookware.
The good news is, there is an excellent selection to choose from, including the very popular Neoflam range.
Free of harmful chemicals and heavy metals, the Neoflam Ecolon range of ceramic cookware uses a coating made of silica - a natural material found in sand and stone.
Extremely durable and scratch resistant, these great pots and pans are lightweight and oven-safe and, of course, naturally non-stick.
That means you can cook your favourite meals easily and safely, without using large amounts of oil, and with no toxic fumes.
Here at Luvin Life, we love Neoflam's colourful Amie induction cookware range, which are eco-friendly, PFOA and PTFE free, easy to clean, dishwasher-safe, and long-lasting.
While we're talking about healthy cooking, you'll be pleased to know that fried food is not as bad or fattening as some people think. It just depends on how often you have it, and the type of oil you use.
Our bodies need essential fatty acids to stay healthy. These can be found in monounsaturated fats - like olive oil, nuts and seeds, and avocado - and in polyunsaturated fat, which we get from nuts and soy products, such as tofu.
'Healthy fats' not only meet our nutritional needs, but can also help lower cholesterol and reduce heart disease.
So next time you feel like a bit of a fry up, there's no need to feel guilty. Just grab your PFOA-free cookware, good oil and favourite foods, and get cooking. Your taste buds, and your body, will thank you for it!
