Essential Oils for Cleaning

Essential Oils for Cleaning

What do you use to clean your home? Do you trawl the supermarket aisles for the latest and greatest sprays and foams to wipe away dirt and banish germs? Do you shudder at the cost of these products? You may also be wondering if using them is doing you harm.

There is a simple solution that will save you loads of money, do a great job and look after your health, and that's using essential oils for cleaning.

By buying just a few bottles of essential oil, plus household basics like vinegar and bicarb soda, you'll have yourself the best cleaning kit for the whole home.

Here are some of the best oils to use for cleaning:

Have you noticed how many household cleaning products have a lemon fragrance? Fresh and zesty it actually makes your home smell clean. Now you can get the same effect without potentially dangerous chemicals by buying Lemon Essential Oil.

All you need is a cup of white vinegar, 2 cups of hot water and 15 drops of lemon oil. Combine the ingredients in a glass spray bottle and hey presto, you have a homemade cleaner for the inside of your fridge and microwave. It will remove dirt, kill germs (because lemon oil is a natural disinfectant) and leave the appliances smelling divine.

If you like, you can swap the lemon oil for Lemongrass or Lime.

FAST FACT: Leave out the vinegar and you've got a wonderful chemical-free air freshener!

Tea Tree (Melaleuca)

Tea Tree Essential Oil is amazing! Whilst it may not be everybody's favourite scent, it has a million and one uses around the home. Tea Tree has long been used for its antibacterial, anti-fungal, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, so it's brilliant for cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, including the toilet.

With no nasty chemicals or bleach, it's safer for you, your family and the environment.

Rosemary Essential Oil is a magical oil that has natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Put a few drops in with your laundry; mix with water for an instant air freshener or use in a diffuser as a deodoriser.

Or, mix 3 parts bicarb of soda with one part water to make a paste, add a few drops of Rosemary Oil, and you have a tough but safe cleaner for stubborn marks and stains.

Lavender Essential Oil should be part of your cleaning kit, medicine box and beauty range! In fact, if you can only buy one essential oil, choose this one.

Lavender Oil is naturally antibacterial so you can use it in cleaning sprays and pastes, or as an air freshener. Just add 5 drops to your basic white vinegar and water mix, or to your bicarb paste.

Naturally antibacterial and antiseptic, Cinnamon Essential Oil is your go-to for mould and mildew. So much safer than commercial mould killers, simply mix one cup of white vinegar with one cup of hot water and add 10-15 drops of cinnamon oil. Spray, leave for a few minutes and then wipe.

FAST FACT: Cinnamon sticks are a great way of deterring insects and other pests. Simply place in drawers or under furniture - but away from children and pets.

Happy Cleaning!
